Organizer

Bayard Rustin

1912 – 1987

Brought Gandhian nonviolent strategy into the American freedom movement. Lead organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. His openly gay identity was used to sideline him at multiple points; he organized brilliantly from the margins. Presidential Medal of Freedom, posthumously, 2013.
