W. E. B. Du Bois

1868 – 1963

First African American to earn a PhD from Harvard. Co-founder of the NAACP. Author of The Souls of Black Folk (1903) and the corrective magnum opus Black Reconstruction in America (1935). Founded the Atlanta University Studies of the Negro Problem, the first sustained empirical sociology of Black American life.
