John Lewis

1940 – 2020

Chairman of SNCC. Spoke at the 1963 March on Washington at age 23. Beaten unconscious by Alabama State Troopers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965. Congressman from Georgia's 5th district from 1987 until his death. Arrested 45 times in service of “good trouble, necessary trouble.”
