Little Rock Central High School
Where nine Black students — Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo — integrated a previously all-white public high school in September 1957. Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard to block their entry. President Dwight Eisenhower federalized the Guard and deployed the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army to escort the Little Rock Nine into the school.
