Ella Baker spent five decades building the architecture of the civil rights movement — from the NAACP to SCLC to SNCC — largely without credit. She insisted on organizing around community leadership rather than charismatic figures. She was the organizer’s organizer. She once said: “Strong people don’t need strong leaders.” She was right.
