Dorothy Cotton was the only woman in the inner circle of SCLC leadership during the height of the civil rights movement. She directed the Citizenship Education Program — a network that trained thousands of ordinary Black Southerners to read, register, and vote. She later served as student affairs vice president at Cornell University.
